Yule Cone of Power - woven chanting

Description

In this clip, members of the Winding Road Coven, a Wiccan community in central Ohio, participate in a Cone of Power ritual during a Yule celebration. The Cone of Power is a common Wiccan practice of raising energy for magical purposes, usually through chanting. Participants stand in a circle and link hands, forming the base of an invisible cone, to the top of which energy is believed to flow. “It is about the magic. It is about vibrating and radiating the appropriate waves to attract back the desired effects,” explained Wiccan priest Brian Edwards, who leads Winding Road. At Yule, Winding Road Coven members honored the winter solstice - the longest night of the year, when the God of Light is believed both to die and be reborn, and when negativity within the self can also be dispelled and transformed. Unique to the Winding Road Coven’s Cone of Power, however, is a practice known as “word weaving.” Participants alternate between different chants to create a rhythm, which harmonizes people’s energies to achieve magical outcomes, Edwards explained. He said he began learning how to word weave through dreams when he was a teenager, and it has since become a part of the coven’s practice and tradition. (Lauren Pond)
