American Religious Sounds Project

Individual HU song and explanation

Description

In this clip, Mary Jane Portaz sings HU, which she and other adherents to the new religious movement Eckankar believe to be an ancient word for God. By repeatedly singing the word HU, Eckists say they can alter their inner landscape and consciousness, raise energy, and become closer to the divine. This recording was made inside the Columbus Eckankar Center, an Eckankar worship space located inside of an office building and beside a major thoroughfare in northeast Columbus, OH. During worship services, the sounds of other building tenants, including another religious community, sometimes filtered in. The Columbus Eckankar Center has since relocated to a different part of the city.
